I noticed the copy of Moderat's album which many of you may have downloaded a while back was missing some of my favorite songs from the album, like 'Les Grandes Marches' and 'Berlin', anyways here's what came with the digital release (includes some bonus tracks: 'Beats Way Sick (feat. Busdriver)' and 'Rusty Nails (Shackleton Remix)') One of the best albums of the year, don't pass it up>
Zomby, who's real identity is unknown, is a british Dubstep DJ/Producer, from Kode9's Hyperdub Label. Excluding his 2008 debut Album, Where were you in 92', which was inspired by the sounds of early 90's rave music (like acid house, breakbeat, hardcore techno), his music draws a lot of influence from early italian analog synth experimentalists, it may just be a coincidence but considering his name is Zomby, and considering the great zombie films of the late 70s and early 80s often used these cool dark chippy electronic soundtracks, i wouldn't be surprised. Since you might not know what that sounds like i'll put a track by Goblin from Dawn of the Dead (1978) below so you can see for yourself. Anyways full of horror inspired gloopy face melting synths and awesome beats, Enjoy>
So Jumpman and I went to another free Scion House Party show at the Roxy, this time Dubstep. I've got to say, I think the crowd enjoyed this one the most so far. Funny thing about all these shows so far is that the headliner for each one has been disappointing and resulted in the crowd leaving, all 3 I've been to. Here's the play by play for this one:
-M
First up was 12th Planet. He used to make DnB but has since found his calling in Dubstep. He's signed to So Sweet Records now (who I intern for), and will be playing at both EDC as well as the next Scion House Part with Kode9 & The Spaceape and Martyn (SO EXCITED). 12th Planet kicked ass. He mixed hard ass Dubstep with 2 CDJs, no computer, and had a fucking blast on stage. He was really involved with the music and the crowd, and the crowd loved it. I'm excited to see him again.
This video sucks, but its basically the best I could find of him playing live.
Next up was Joker along with his MC Nomad. I love Joker's productions, and hopefully Jumpman will post about him (or just plain post about anything). Joker was an awesome DJ, using SSL and some turntables, but he showed as much emotion as a rock, seriously. He never smiled, barely moved, he was just a statue. His MC was very laid back and cool, and was definitely a plus but overall very inactive. However, it worked, and they destroyed the crowd from start to finish with super filthy dubstep beats, good mixing, and great interaction with the crowd from Nomad. He ended on Skream's awesome remix of La Roux (grab it HERE), and then Skream came up on stage from nowhere. Skream and Joker then did a stage dive during the big drop at the end of the remix (this was the only time Joker smiled during the whole show), and he was quite heavy and hard to carry. Best of the night, although I preferred 12th Planet's stage presence.
They played this track when I saw em:
Finally, up came Zomby in a Guy Fawkes mask. Zomby makes some awesome shit, with dubstep EPs that have this really distinctive and unique sound and an album that's trying to revive 90's Rave House. He was using Ableton. However, his set was mostly the Rave House, which was totally fine by me (in fact I prefered it), but the crowd was not as happy. This was a Dubstep crowd through and through, they were even singing along to a bunch of songs that the other DJs played. Zomby also had a bunch of technical problems which affected his sound making some things too soft but mostly it was just way too loud and made some people just leave the venue holding their hands over their ears. At one point, he even brough in a song that wasn't beatmatched correctly (how do you evne do that in Ableton? Thats what happens when you DJ without headphones... fuckin Ableton). When he put on his last song Strange Fruit, he checked his cell phone, drank the rest of his champagne, and then just left the stage while the song was still playing. Jumpman's guess is that he started as a producer and is relatively new to DJing, which I would definitely believe, especially since I can't find any youtube videos of him playing live.
So instead, I have a video of Erol Alkan dropping Strange Fruit:
Overall fun night, just sad to see Zomby fall apart like that, especially since his tracks were awesome. He really should be playing the House stage at a big rave.
DJ Yoda is a Hip-Hop DJ from the UK that is commonly described as DJ Shadow with a sense of humor. And I must stress, this guy is HILARIOUS. He even has a track on his album with Biz Markie laying down rhymes about Breakfast Cereal, and believe me its even more awesome than it sounds. He's also got these great mixes/albums that I won't be posting, but if you like what you hear, you should go out and grab em, he's even got one of all 80's tracks.
-M
*NOTE All links fixed Mash Up Minimix (30.11.2007) - DJ Yoda This was a re-airing of his mix for Annie Mac's show on Radio 1 that happened in 2004. Start with this. Really shows off his skill as a DJ.
The Amazing Adventures Of DJ Yoda - DJ Yoda His album, released in 2006. This shit is awesome. Collection of awesome beats and raps, very lighthearted and fun. Good pregame/party music. All I can say is hilarious and fun, something that everyone will like.
I do love that song Colt 45, but Afroman's got nothing on Afrojack. Our next feature is a minimal/tech house producer from Holland that's doing extremely well for himself right now, even landing himself a collaboration with Diplo on one of the tracks for the new Major Lazer album, as well as remixing the likes of Laidback Luke, Steve Angello, and Spencer & Hill. He makes the kind of house music that pleases both the dance and hip-hop crowd, similar to Sidney Samson and Chuckie. Really ravey stuff. This is a MUST HAVE for people who like to make acapella mashups, but still highly recommened for the house heads. Favorites up top with collection at bottom:
-M Don't Be - Afrojack I really really really love this one. Very short and simple but just works so well.
Pod De Floor' feat. VYBZ Kartel - Major Lazer This is the same track as How I Like It - Diplo & Afrojack with different vocals. Personally, I think it was better with the original vocals, but I can only find a rip of it, whereas this Major Lazer track is a legit track.
I'm gonna get myself a new internal HD soon, so I can stop worrying about space. Such a bitch. As I write this, I have 220.7 MB left on my computer. I've put a hold on all blog reading until then, so I've gotten quite behind.
EDIT J'S Additions: A few things M Missed which I love and had laying around in my itunes:
I think so. That kid looks like a doll or a dummy, I don't know it's just weird. This kid shouldn't listen to house music, he might pass out from dancing too much. I've decided for batches to put up a rating system with stars out of 5. Help you decide what you might want and what you might not want... Always helps me when I'm looking at blogs.
I just want to give a little shout out to all my friends in Boston for keeping me company while I've been here, not that they read this blog. Every single one finds electronic dance music of mostly any kind too repetitive. One of them didn't like Lava Lava when I showed it to him because he thought I was just showing him house, but then he heard it again and liked it, so it shows how much he was actually listening... Then again I also showed him Break the house down, he didn't like it, I put it on again, and he suddenly liked it. So who knows...
-J
Mommy Complex (Barletta & Ernold Sane Remix) by Peaches Not new and not great quality, but god damn the song is so fucking cool. Hell yes. Definitely worth of being put into a higher energy electro set. That kid up there definitely feels a mommy complex. ****
Bob-Omb (Original Mix) by Darkwin Backwall So Ravey yet it still has that awesome kick. This one is going in the mix I'm currently making. And the end of that drop is so cool. ****
Saturate by Chemical Brothers, I can't remember if I read this was new, but god damn it's AMAZING. And when I say AMAZING I really mean it. It's beautiful. Don't pass this one up...I mean it's Chemical Brothers, why would you? Sorry for poor quality. *****
-M Hungry For The Power - Azari & III Really old school house, everyone loves that classic 808 cowbell, right? Definitely confuses me since I know that the cd's gonna have electro, but oh well.
Face To Face (Cosmo Vitelli Remix) - Daft Punk This was on Daft Club, really reminds me of Todd Edwards. Is it the best remix? No, but it's definitely a really interesting take on a flawless track.
You're Not Alone 2009 (Dave Darell Remix) by Liz Kay, This remix is just so incredible there are so few words to describe it. For those who like Dave Darell's suddenly remix this is an absolute must. Definitely up there in my favorites of this guy's stuff and for electro house songs in general. Just Wait for that fucking DROP, it's an explosion.
Tree Hugger by Lazy Jay I gotta say the beginning and end...kinda boring, but the middle section is just so fuckin awesome. I mean it's kinda like Baggy Bottom Boys, except the drop after the amazing buildup is just...eh. However that bass on big speakers might explode, but even so... Remix Potential? I think so.
Unprepared (Full Prepared Mix) by Marco V, new to our blog, but someone who I would really love to do a post on in the near future. M got his album a while ago and said it was classified as tech trance? This just sounds like electro house to me. Really cool. And I really do love the vocals, very indie, sounds like Franz Ferdinand in a way.
Unprepared (Extended Mix) by Marco V, I can see the Trance elements in this I guess, but still sounds more housey to me then trancey. Definitely Tech-Housey. Kinda Audible like.
On to some Joachim Garraud, calmer that's for sure, still really cool:
Street Sound (Original Mix) by Joachim Garraud, I've figured out that this song's beginning sounds like the beginning to Bang That Box (Laidback Luke Remix), at least it's the same pattern? If this came first, I can see Laidback as getting some inspiration from this song.
I'm Gonna get some Joachim Garraud as well, cause he's got some really cool shit.
Expect Batch 3 and one of the two artists I mentioned about getting above sometime in the very near future.
So I finally got my computer back up and fully running, though unfortunately I lost quite a bit of music, though at the same time it wasn't anything too important, but 40 GB gone can be kinda depressing. Here's my first out of a few batches that I'm gonna post in the next few days, most of which has already been posted by a variety of house blogs that I read. Spencer & Hill for our first batch.
Is this a really old TV Rock track? Pretty short too... I gotta say I both hate it and love it at the same time, such funny and yet amazing lyrics: Flaunt It by TV Rock
The new Yelle if you havn't already gotten it, it's great:
So our good friends over at Just Gravy, No Potatoes just posted some awesome original mixes, and I must stress awesome, so I felt inspired to answer back with one. Been sitting on this one for a month or two now, but I guess this is a good time to pull it out. We will also be releasing our first official Bastille mixtape soon, hopefully this month, for sending to blogs and such and we'll be sure to let you know when it ready. This one is mostly Electro and Fidget and clocks in a little under 50 minutes, so please enjoy.
Jay Dee aka J Dilla aka your favorite producer's favorite producer is the godfather of the experimental hip hop movement. His albums are some of the best hip hop albums of all time. Some of his work could even be classified as the next step from Soul music. Jay Stay Paid, having just came out (June 2 of this year), is a collection of previously unreleased material, mostly comprised of instrumental beats but also features some of his favorite rappers, including AwB favorite MF Doom. Dilla is the main influence of the new experimental/psychedelic hip hop scene that's arisen with already established artists like Madlib, Prefuse 73, and Daedelus, as well as the up and coming kings of the underground like Flying Lotus. This is one of the most exciting releases of recent.
I've got a pretty firm grip on what most genres of Electronic Dance Music sound like, but Techno has confused me for some time. What exactly IS techno? I know that everyone tends to refer to all EDM as techno, like, "Oh, I don't really like Techno, it's too repetive for me. I only like songs with lyrics." But Techno is something entirely different from, say, House or Trance. However, I'm starting to understand it more: Techno is much more robotic and lifeless, where House is funky and soulfull. For all ye that are interested in learning more about the history of electronic music, as well as the differences between genres, go HERE. And now time for an awesome Techno track by Jeff Mills:
The Vortex is the combo of Y@ and Reality, and this post is about their solo stuff. Canada does not get the recognition it deserves, as it's produced a fair amount of awesome guys, like Deadmau5, Chromeo, and MSTRKRFT (remember how awesome they were when they were Canadian and not Los Angelino). Well, here are two tracks by some up and coming Canadian producers that I'm really rooting for.
-M
Just Say Yes - Y@ He found a new sound with this track, and I must say I love this direction. Big improvement from his older stuff and much more friendly to the blog crowd. Big ups.
I Love You - Reality Pretty dubstep track. Not something I'd play live, but very enjoyable listen.
I decided to replace the hard drive for my computer so I could hold more stuff. it's a pretty simple process which usually only takes 5 -10 min at most, but at this point it's taken me three days (because I don't have a car here and can't do whatever the fuck I want). First I didn't have the right tools, then the harddrive i got, which was supposed to be able to hold 320 gb, only seems to hold 80. I'm pretty sure either someone mislabeled the drive or some person took the label from the 320 drive stuck it on another smaller drive and returned that one (cheap way to make money but hey, I say this because the tag looked used). Hopefully I can find the receipt and return it tomorrow, if not I'm gonna get pissed.
This is the music video for Flashback by Laurent Garnier, directed by Quentin Dupieux, otherwise known as Mr. Oizo. One of the funniest things I've seen in some time.
This post marks the end of our little Mau5trap feature, hope you enjoyed it. Julien Arias, commonly known as just Arias, is a French Progressive/Electro House DJ/producer here to remind us that France still makes great House music. This Parisian makes really massive tracks, all of which are beautiful in some way. I could see him getting played by those Swedish bastards we all love, and he's collaborated with Arno Cost as well as remixed David Guetta, Tristan Garner, and Noir. Favorites up top with collection at bottom:
-M Atlantic (Original Mix) - Arias If you have somehow forgotten the meaning of the word Drop, this first one in this track will surely remind you. Progressive BOMB, will destroy crowd. Saira (Original Mix) - Arias Another bomb, this one way more Electro. I can't really explain this one, all I can say is awesome. It's like Crystal Castles meets Big Room Electro House, since the hook is this incredible chip sound.
In addition, he has a fantastic remix of Insomnia, one of the most epic House tracks of all time, but there only seems to be one version out there and it has this tiny little glitch, making it not so DJ friendly, but here it is. Insomnia (Arias Remix) - Faithless
And now collection time. If you like the above tracks, you really should dig through these, worth your time: Arias Collection
Buttons (Chris Lake Remix) - Sia I actually just got this track fairly recently and fell in love with it. The second buildup is beautiful. So amazing. The track's got an Electro bass with Housey piano chords and even some Tech House sounds.
EDIT: I guess that's supposed to be Mr. WTF. He is my idol so please don't say anything mean about him, as I wish to someday be him (plastic surgery though I sort of look like him already). Continuing with our little Mau5trap posts, I'm here to talk about WTF? So who the fuck, are WTF? Well it consists of Deadmau5, Steve Duda, Dj Aero, and Tommy Lee. Unlike BSOD, this stuff is definitely less hardcore and more typical Deadmau5. But that's of course just a plus for us. At the end of the day, it's Deadmau5, why would you pass this up? It's all good, and there's not much of it (but this is all of it, I checked beatport), all 320.
Feed Me is an awesome Electro House DJ/producer from London on the Mau5trap label that we've featured on this blog as a bonus before, but now he's back. Really hard hitting and crowd pleasing stuff, you'll want to include him in your next set for sure. This guy should really start touring.
-M
Remixes:
Knights Of Cydonia (Feed Me Remix) - Muse Wow. If this doesn't destroy your crowd, whether you're playing college, club, rave, or whatever, then I really don't know what will. That crowd probably wants Lil' Wayne or some shit.
If You Knew (Feed Me Remix) - Chris Lake Feat Nastala Housey with an awesome Electro bass and some cool glitchy sounds every so often. Great track. Expect a Chris Lake post in the very near future during this little Mau5trap streak. Cheers to Stoneyroads for the track, I had to email them for it. Until I Die (Feed Me Remix) - September I had no idea who September was about two weeks ago, but now I'm seeing her name pop up a lot of places. I guess she's trying to make a comeback and part of that is getting some awesome remixers. This track is epic as hell.
Originals: The Spell - Feed Me This is the track I posted as a bonus before, still just as awesome. Pure Electro, reminds you why you love it. Raw Chicken - Feed Me *Drool
We're gonna do a little Mau5trap theme for the time being and provide you with some tracks by Sydney Blu, otherwise known as Deadmau5' girlfriend. However, she ain't no Yoko, as she actually can make a track and apparently spins a damn good set. Is she the best producer? Well, she barely has any original material at the moment, and she may have gotten a little help from behind the scenes, but all that means is another Deadmau5 track, and that's always a plus. Besides, how many female House DJs are there, especially ones that play awesome electro house rather than just sing the same shit on the next David Guetta track?
Senses And The Mind (Olivier Giacomotto Remix) - Sydney Blu Much better constructed and DJ friendly. Ideally for a rave crowd, pretty Minimal but still Electro House. Second best track in this post. *Change name in song from Oliver to Olivier
BONUS: Body Crash (Global Deejays Remix) - Buy Now Best remix of this song out there without a question. You WILL love this. Still looking for the original if anyone happens to have it.
Guess who's getting a Pioneer cdj 1000 mk3 tomorrow (I guess today now that it's 6 47 in the morning), well it's me. Found a used one in great condition and for a great price, and I'm so pumped.
But on to the main attraction:
BSOD (Better Sounding on Drugs) is the combination of Deadmau5 and Steve Duda. That should already tell anybody one thing: this stuff is awesome. I mean Deadmau5 doesn't really make anything bad, so why would this be different? I have yet to find a track that I don't like. BSOD has that Deadmau5 touch and sound but definitely with a more hardcore electro house feel (especially with the bass). I don't know if that's from Duda or if basically Deadmau5 has decided here is the side project where he makes harder hitting stuff (don't take that the wrong way, I love all of Deadmau5's stuff). At the same time, you can tell though the music is serious, they're definitely having a good time (the titles and the lyrics). Basically if you like Deadmau5: I have no idea why you would even consider passing this up. If you're ok with Deadmau5/like electro-house/like electro: download everything you possibly can.
Highly Highly Highly Recommended
That poster up there is funny, Deadmau5, BSOD Deadmau5 side project, Chris Lake who Deadmau5 works with, Sydney Bluhis girlfriend, WTF? (Expect a post soon on WTF?) another Deadmau5 side project, I guess Tommy Lee sings over Dj Aero's djing?, and i'm not sure what Uniform is, but the whole lineup is definitely a mautrap.
EDIT: After a bit more research I figured out that Tommy Lee and DJ Aero are the other members of WTF?.
Not everything is 320, but this stuff was also relatively hard to find. I'm actually surprised I found so many 320s. I have one request for anybody/everybody to find, the song saws and squares. I really want it and have failed in my quest to find it, but I swear I will have it.
BSOD (Original Mix) by BSOD Bass, bass, bass, bass, bass, bass. Deadmau5 just has that bass sound which can carry like any song. Amazing, it's not their title track for no reason.
Moderat just released one of my favorite cuts off their album along with some remixes that you'll definitely want to check out. If you haven't already, you should definitely grab their album HERE (via Fake Tattoos) as well as check out our review of their live show HERE. Here's Rusty Nails (12''), tracks in order as they appear on the vinyl:
Rusty Nails (Booka Shade Remix) - Moderat Hell yes, how I love Booka Shade. They're a must see live band as well, really changed my perspective on dance music (I only really liked electro at the time, blew me away).
Can you say dream gig? James Zabiela is a world renowned House/Techno (I have a lot of trouble placing him in a specific genre) DJ/producer from the UK that happens to have beastly CDJ skills and also holds the #17 spot in DJ Mag's lovely Top 100 DJ Poll (everyone should vote next year, Daft Punk deserves better). He will be at EDC saturday night on the main stage, so if you're planning on going (if you live in LA and are reading this, you obviously are), you really should take a break from the Electro stage to check this fool out. When playing live, he uses two CDJs with one of those crazy Pioneer effects things AND THEN a comp with a midi controller seperately (aka CDJs aren't running through the comp). But enough about his live show, here's what he's capable of in the studio:
Candy (James Zabiela Remix) - Spooky The best part about all his songs are the percussion, meaning all the really cool drums that aren't just kick and snare. He just knows how to produce, thats all there really is to say. Remind Me (James Zabielas Ingeborg Mix) - Royksopp This one's different, most likely because its from 2002 rather than 2008 like the rest. Less housey.
The Perseverance EP - James Zabiela His EP that I managed to grab a while back from The Piratebay. Just as awesome as his remixes. I highly recommened listening to this with your eyes close and a good pair of headphones. Masterful production, really beautiful.
Darkness EP - James Zabiela Much darker than his other EP (hence the title I suppose), a lot more like his remixes, but still the same top notch production. Comes with an awesome remix of one of the tracks on the other EP.
Also, check out this video to viddy his horrorshow CDJ skills:
Also, we're always looking for more tracks, so if you happen to have any tracks by him that you noticed I didn't post (this is everything I got of his), please help us out and give us a link in the comments. This really goes for any of the guys we post about, we're more an aggregator than a regular blog anyways.
Dada Life are a fantastic electro house duo from Sweden (oh how we love Sweden) that is absolutely killing it right now and has a huge fan base in both the house and electro crowds (Check out our first post on them HERE). They're also on the verge of releasing their next album, Just Do The Dada, which I must say is fantastic as its got banger after banger. Really excited for when they release DJ friendly 12'' versions of all the songs on the album so we can start dropping them in sets. We are extremely proud to present our interview with Dada Life:
Apes With Barrels: How did Dada Life get started?
Dada Life: We had an idea back in 2006 that two insane individuals working together will be transformed into a mentally stable organism - Dada Life! As we started composing music together we know that it was love at first sight.
AwB: Where did the name Dada Life come from? DL: We wanted a name that says f#ck everything and just have fun. People tend to think too much and worry about stupid things. Forget about tomorrow and have fun now!
AwB: What were your guys' roots musically? DL: Both Olle and I have been into music for ages. Olle has been doing everything from playing in a punk-band to doing sound installations in Brazil. I’ve been doing crazy Japanese boy band to really heavy trance stuff.
AwB: Why Guerilla Farts?
DL: Whenever we feel that a track is missing some elements we go in a add them. Sometimes it’s just a new bassdrum and a C64 blipp, other times we take the hook and make a completely new production. It’s not a remix, it’s not a bootleg it’s a Guerilla Fart! What is your guys' favorite Guerilla Fart? (We know ours is your remix of Domino)We love all our Guerilla Farts, at the moment I must say fart #8, “The Timelords/KLF - Doctorin The Tardis (Dada Life Guerilla Fart #8)" I Will Rock You (Dada Life Guerilla Fart #9) - Domino
AwB: What's the usual process behind your production (i.e. samples first, a bass line that turns into a song...), and what advice would you give to producers working hard out there? DL: It can be anything from hammering a fork on the table to some chords on a guitar. Every track has its unique story.
AwB: What programs/synths do you use to produce? DL: Mainly we use Ableton Live, it’s an amazing program! We can’t wait until they release next version - Max for Live!!!
AwB: What were some of the intentions behind the new album?
DL: To make a bunch of hit songs that you will be ashamed that you liked in a few years!
AwB: We noticed that you drop a lot of electro in your sets (as in The Bloody Beetroots, Mr. Oizo, and Crookers). We've seen you guys defined as all sorts of genres like electro, house, minimal, and tech house. How would you categorize your sound if you must and what other artists have a similar sound (if any)?
DL: Kiddy Pop!
AwB: We first learned about you guys from your remix of Break the House Down on Laidback Luke's EP and immediately noticed your name as a point of interest. So we've always attributed you guys and Laidback Luke together in our minds. We've also noticed that Laidback Luke's remixed some of your guys' stuff. Do you guys have any personal connection to him?
DL: Laidback Luke is an extremely talented guy, we’re discussing with him a collaboration with Dada Life ☺ (AWESOME!!!!!!)
Break The House Down (Dada Life Remix) - Laidback Luke (REMOVED)
AwB: Why are so many of the best House producers coming out of Sweden? Is it the smörgåsbord of musical influences? DL: I think that our tap water is polluted from the northern lights combined with the polar bears. We stay inside safe from the polar bears just making music.
AwB: What's a song that will destroy any crowd no matter what? DL: We’re in the planning to make the ultimate Guerilla Fart, a Fart that will destroy a whole genre. It’s top secret, and we’ve just got the best encryption software to protect this idea. Can’t say much more…
AwB: Who should we look into that you think we would like / should be watching out for? DL: Super Viral Brothers
AwB: Who should we interview next?
DL: Super Viral Brothers
AwB: Would an Eskimo stripper be the shit right now? How bout some hot chocolate?
I must say, they have the most amazing photographer. Just Do The Dada will be out September 8, 2009, and I can assure you all that you won't want to miss this one. That possible collaboration with Laidback Luke is really exciting, but I must say I have another collaboration in mind that I think would blow that out of the water. Does anyone else want to see a release from Gaga Life in 2009?
Here's the video for the frist single off the album, Happy Hands & Happy Feet:
In our quest to get everything Wolfgang Gartner has every made. Unfortunately we're still missing some stuff but be content to get all of these. I'm sorry this post is so short, I've had a very long day, but I still want to share these tracks, Expect that interview to go up tomorrow. If you want the rest of the collection go here, here, here, and here. I'm sorry most of these are such shit quality, they were really hard to find...
Daft Punk saved House music. Back during a time when House music was dying due to lack of innovation, these French blokes, along with other Frenchmen like Etienne De Crecy and Alex Gopher, took House in a completely new direction, using cooler, funkier samples, and FILTERS. This is why French House is also commonly referred to as Filter House. I know that everyone's got all the Daft Punk albums (if you don't you should really get on that shit), but I got a request from a faithful lil' reader (he's in middle school I think, mad props for liking House music at that age) for rare Daft Punk tracks. So, here are Daft Punk's remixes, along with their first ever vinyl release:
-M
EDIT
Apparently all the links are down, so here's a giant zip with all of the tracks. Sorry, but I'm just too lazy to individually replace them. A few other tracks in there that I didn't include originally.
Disco Cubizm (Daft Punk Remix) - I:cube
This is a PERFECT SHINING EXAMPLE of French House. It's funky, cool, uses filters, housey. You could easily picture a frenchman lounging about smoking a cigarette and drinking some fine wine to this.
Aerodynamic (Daft Punk Remix) - Daft Punk
This one was on Daft Club, which may or may not be a good album, I haven't really decided yet. This has the ever so awesome mashup of One More Time and Aerodynamic. They MUST have made those songs to work together, they're the same fucking tempo.
Kiss (Daft Punk Remix) - Prince
This does not sound like their other remixes at all, much more electro, but its good. I used to think it was a fake until I saw the Discogs entry confirming it (LINK).
Get Funky Get Down (Daft Punk Remix) - Micronauts
This sounds completely different from all of their other tracks, and you'd think it was fake until you hear their frist vinyl release thats coming up in this post. Fast tempo, really minimal, and super repetitive. Really hardcore too. They hadn't really found their sound yet.
Take Me Out (Daft Punk Remix) - Franz Ferdinand
The ONLY, and I really mean ONLY, track by Daft Punk that dissapoints me. I don't get it. It's definitely real too, that same Discogs entry confirms it. They just added some distortion to the original. This track is the biggest mystery to me.
This is definitely before they found their sound. The New Wave is the track that would eventually become Alive on Homework. A lot like their remix of Micronauts, but not as interesting. Assault is more interesting in my opinion. Also includes Alive as the final mix of The New Wave. Most of you will not like this record, and I can't really say that I love it either, but its really cool to see what Daft Punk made before they become, you know, DAFT PUNK.
BONUS: Technologic (Le Knight Club Remix) - Daft Punk Le Knight Club, for those of you who don't know, is composed of Guy Manuel (of Daft Punk) and Eric Chedeville and is one of the most respected French House groups around. They also created the label Crydamoure, arguably the most important French House label. This track doesn't really show off their skill, but this post IS about rare / less known Daft Punk, so yeah. However, DO expect more posts on them when I'm feeling throwbacky, along with some Thomas Bangalter posts. God I love French House.
I got this stuff by Marvin a while back from TooManySebastians, and it kind fell through the cracks unintentionally. But today I noticed it in my library and decided to give it a shot. Boy was I surprised. Really cool stuff, with what I would even call in some ways almost a Justice like sound (Marvin's making more of a Justice sound then Justice themselves). I would head over to TooManySebastians post and get the two songs posted. Unfortunately Nihilism is not up in that post (you can hear it on the myspace), and I would definitely love to have that song. "Babylon Part 1" is cool but it takes quite a long time to really drop, and then it turns into a sort of waters of nazareth type thing, that part's an A+. "Fuck off yeah" is cool, but not like anything amazing, I don't expect to listen to it again, and it's the ultimate party killer if you played it live. I dare anybody to do it, film it and let me know. -J
Everyone knows this song, Mylo earned himself a place in electronic music history with this sucker. Here are some fantastic remixes/edits to drop in your sets and make the crowd go nuts or just simply enjoy to yourself, I suppose.
-M Drop The Pressure (Laidback Luke Bootleg) - Mylo (Removed) Laidback Luke is a house genius. He truly understands the meaning of buildup and drop, this track especially being no exception. Go HERE for more of his awesome bootlegs.
Drop The Pressure (Rex The Dog Remix) - Mylo The bravest remix of the bunch, actually ventures to stray a bit from the original and play with the line and stuff and add in all sorts of crazy synths. Expect a Rex The Dog post eventually... Drop The Pressure (Erol Alkan's Extended Re-Edit) - Mylo Epicly long edit that apparently gets a lot of play from bigger than big DJs everywhere, including Sasha. It's definitely a good track, but not my personal choice to play, but I guess the point is that an over 9 minute track will definitely Keep Kids Dancing for a while. Drop the Pressure 2009 (Electro Bass Mix) - Mylo Not sure if this is Mylo or someone else reworking the track, but it packs a punch, if the title didn't already imply that enough. Cheers to Fake Tattoos for this track, even if they posted it ages ago.
