Stop Internet Censorship!

Congress is trying to pass a bill that would force US internet providers to disallow access to certain sites that are on their blacklist.  This would surely take away some of our favorites like Demonoid, Piratebay.  Demonoid is urging people to this THIS PETITION, so please, I will urge you as well.

It's also possible that you maybe just believe in free speech and all that stuff.  But chances are, if you're reading this site, you like free shit even more.  Fuck yeah America.

-M

Cryptic Motion (Mr. Oizo Remix) - Squarepusher (Golden Banana)
Hell yes.  Hell yes.  Hell yes.  Of course, Oizo is not for everyone, but for those who appreciate.  Yes.

Also, big shout out to mah besty for making us some super sick artwork.  You'll see it in the mp3 above.  The Besty, aka Tiffermeister, looks something like THIS.

Hard Summer Review

So Hard Summer ended up being awesome. You had like all those raver kids, some of those sketchy ass peeps, and those normal people who just look like they don't know what they got themselves into. All in all the whole atmosphere was less threatening and I really did like the venue + it was less crowded so I could get my groove on. Oh and there was better food? Is that a plus.

But yo it was tight cause everythin went well and it didn't get shut down like last year. Bitches everywhere just goin crazy (both girl and boy) and it was just like people enjoyin the music. There was some fun shit, nothin bad so here are just some o the best.

Good Job Hard you made one of the better events i've been to in a long while.

-J

1. Soulwax

I mean there's been a bunch of hype around these dudes playin and i've just been waitin to see em and boy did they bring it. Just watchin em you get pumped then you listen to their shit and oyu just get ...more pumped. I don't even know what they was doin but they just kept it clean and they kept it dirtay at the same time. WHo does that? THese guys. Go see them, youse understands why.

My favorite:

Lovelight (Soulwax remix) by Robbie WIlliams

2. Erol Alkan,

What the fuck else does he really do? He's got some good shit I guess but like he's not up there for "producer of the year" but he's a damn fine dj, playin shit that we all liked and just keepin it real. Definitely worth seeing. I like it, you like it, he likes it, she likes it, we like it, you all like it, they like it.

Lemonade (original Mix) by Boys Noize and Erol Alkan

3. Breakbot,

This dude is a sick ass dj, just get one of his mixes. I mean just incredible. I would love to see him again, I wish he had played later, he was killin it with such an early time slot, I can't even imagine what would have happened if he had been later. SHit would have gone crazy.

Aerius Light (Breakbot Remix) by Data

4. Flying Lotus

I mean he's both a sick ass person and sick ass dj. LA REPRESENT. Love this dude, plus he kills it every time. Los Angeles Legend, the one and only fly lo. Everything he does turns to gold. Don't miss this dude.

Where's The Money George

WHERE'S THE MONEY GEORGE ? from oizo mr on Vimeo.

We here at AwB love Oizo with a passion.  But rather than go on and explain our school girl crush on the man, I'm gonna apologize for taking such a long absence from posting.  We, that is Bastille, have been in an extremely productive phase, and thus have been focusing on that.  Hopefully we'll be able to release what we've been working on soon.

-M

And why not a few favorites?

Patrick 122 - Mr. Oizo
When push comes to shove, probably my favorite Oizo track.

Little Bit Of Feel Good (Mr. Oizo Remix) - Jamie Lidell
You just gotta FEEL this one

Half A Scissor - Mr. Oizo
A great example of how his strange style can translate into brilliance.  Stay with this one, it takes a while to drop.

To Protect and Entertain (Mr. Oizo Remix) - Busy P
One of the most awesome hip hop beats ever.

Nazis (Justice Remix) - Mr. Oizo
Justice being brilliant as usual, well, as used to be usual.

Only This Moment (Original Mix) - Moonbeam (Golden Banana)
Such a pretty Techno track, and still playable for raves. Like, such a great hook, I'm pretty obsessed.

I Like This Sound (Original Mix) - Youri Donatz & Franky Rizardo
Ravey as hell, and great break right before the drop. You'll love this one.

Che Flute (Chaosz Minimal Remix) - Steve Angello
Really great track, like, really great.

Just a Spoonful - Voodeux
That beautiful style that's like a mix of Tech and Deep House. Really pretty track.

Notations (Rafael Noronha, Re Dupre Remix) - Gui Boratto
I stand by my statement that Techno is Trance for bad asses. Another pretty track.

Star Drumz (Original Mix) - Rene Kuppens
Can't get more minimal than just drums, right? He pulls it off.

I Love London (Femme En Fourrure Remix) - Crystal Fighters
Indie Techno, this got a ton of blog love.

Don't Say A Word (Christian Smith Remix) - Sharam
I really love the vocals on this, especially when I saw the original live and the vocalist was there. So dope.

Whispers In The Dark (Ramon Tapia Remix) - Shades Of Gray
Another Techno meets Deep House track.

BONUS:
MCs Can Kiss (Original) - Uffie
The original Ed Banger hoe bag is back with serious top notch production by Mr. Oizo.

Electro Batch #2

Now I'm gonna go around and do a second batch for a few of the genres, starting with Electro. Whoo Pee!

-M

Eye of The Tiger (Hot Noizes Bootleg) - Survivor
Got this from Too Many Sebastians a while ago, and he really described it best: "didn't expect much when this was put my way. But it turns out it's really quite good and ends up going in a direction you just didn't expect. You should give it a listen!"

Stayin' Alive (Teddybears Remix) - Bee Gees

This remake is awesome, sounds kinda like Justice, although the drums aren't as complex.

Still Wild - Gooseflesh

This track ventures between the calmer/funkier Electro and banger, and does it really well. Amazing track.

Darkness (Owl Vision Remix) - Owl Vision
Pure banger, kinda along the lines of Les Petits Pilous.

Maximum Bass (Original Mix) - Randy Santino, DJ Rockid, MC Goodgrip
Maybe this counts as Fidget House, not sure, but whatever. It does have a pretty massive bass, the title is not lying.

Heads Will Roll (Passion Pit Remix) - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
I NEVER expected anything like this to come from Passion Pit. Dancey Electro, not super happy synth pop.

Nitefist - Richie Beretta
Big Electro banger with epic chords, pretty run of the mill.

BONUS:
Sick Muse (Adam Freeland Remix) - Metric
They were giving this track away for free to all member of hypem, and I really like it. Really pretty and dancey Electro. A lot of people I know hate on Metric, but I really do like her voice.

BONUS BONUS: Flat Eric vs. Pharell

Make of this what you will

French House Arrest Episode VII: Oizoliscious

Man, I'm so happy to be posting again. This is the last post on the godly year that was 1997. In this episode is the first release from one of our favorite producers. Also, I'm posting the album that defined rave music during its time, and it sure wasn't house.

-M

Jumpman tells me that this release is the result of Oizo handing in some demos to Laurent Garnier, who then told him that he should be making music. In fact, most of Oizo's pre Ed Banger Releases were on Garnier's label, F Communications. Now Mr. Oizo rules, and surely you all know that. Every time he releases something, it has a completely new sound but still contains that unique sound that's undeniably Oizo. However, this release is somewhat French House, but much more along the lines of the Motorbass / I:Cube techno-y / deep house sound rather than the disco sounds that were becoming more and more popular during this year. This is not an accessible EP by any means, but my guess is that if you're reading this, you're a fan of Mr. Oizo and are at least curious to try it out. If you haven't heard of Oizo, then just take my word for it: this shit is cool as hell.

This album is the shit. While the French were making house cool again, those British blokes by the name of The Prodigy (but everyone knows it was all Liam Howlett) were tearing the rave shit up with their undeniably awesome hardcore sound. I'm gonna bet that Breakbeat music comes back soon. I mean all the big names have been touring recently, and there are NO Breakbeat producers getting any rep on blogs. It may take a year a two, but when 90's culture rears it's head back into popularity, you can bet that underground Breakbeat producers and DJs will too. I'm actually really excited.

BONUS:
The Party (Splitloop Remix) - Rico Tubbs

Contemporary, probably the only new Breakbeat track that I've gotten from blogs (Pelski specifically). It's awesome, and I want more from Splitloop. Big Electro influence. DJs looking for something different to drop in their sets should definitely pick this up. If anyone has ANY Splitloop, PLEASE hook me up.

Once again, for those of you that follow this blog, if the blog for some reason disappears without warning again, just head on over to apeswithbarrels.wordpress.com where we'll continue our mission to become the greatest pirates to ever surf teh interweb.

I'm Sorry, I Had A Beer Last Night

This is the music video for Flashback by Laurent Garnier, directed by Quentin Dupieux, otherwise known as Mr. Oizo. One of the funniest things I've seen in some time.

Make Love With Jean Moustache

Jean Moustache is an anonymous DJ/producer from France (and apparently Beverly Hills?) that's working to bring back the French House sound, and I must say his efforts so far have been incredible. I just recently picked up his album, which he's giving out for free, and it's one of the best things I've heard in a long time. Great explosive disco rhythms with the weirdness of Mr. Oizo and influence from a lot of places, especially in the later songs (there's even some French Rap). I feel like he's going to turn out to be some producer that we all know who's just trying to reinvent himself, but we'll just have to wait I guess. ALBUM IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, in case I didn't make it clear enough

-M

Here's an interview with the (masked?) man:

Here's a sample track so you can listen to a song before you grab the whole album:
Vodka Champagne - Jean Moustache ft Canblaster

And finally, here's the album:

Groovecity - Jean Moustache

BONUS:
Disco Lasagnes - Burger Beat
(This track came with the album, but technically isn't ON the album)

(And apologies for if the track names are incorrect, my version of the download was awful, used THIS BLOG as a source for corrections / track numbers)

UPDATE: His name is Stephen Dormont. Anti climactic, I know.

The Bug - Some Favorites and London Zoo

The Bug is just one of Kevin Martin's musical aliases. He's been on the London music scene for over a decade, working in industrial hip-hop in the 90's with his acts Techno Animal(remixed by Mr. Oizo here) God, and Ice. As the Bug he produces tracks inspired by a range of west indies influenced genres, including Dubstep, Dancehall, and Grime. He's also had dubstep releases on Hyperdub as Pressure, which i've heard dropped into some sets, and it's good stuff so keep a look out for that.  He also happened to played at Coachella this year, when i heard this, I decided to get his latest LP entitled London Zoo, and i found a few really solid tracks, but was not really taken with the more dancehall/grime style tracks that make up the most of the album, just cause i'm not really a fan of those genres really, however, some track's, like 'poison dart' with Warrior Queen, or 'judgement' with Ricky Ranking are some really amazing dubstep tracks. I've also found some really good dubstep remixes of The Bug by Kode9 and Loefah(who i'd love to hear more from) I mean it when i say that these remixes are some of my favorite dubstep tracks, really hit hard, in a style different from the more rusko/caspa end of the genre, anyways you'll see what i mean, it's really cool, i love the sound, make sure you can hear that bass for full effect. I'll provide a link to London Zoo also cause it's worth checking out, you've got some cool collabs with spaceape, and warrior queen so, yeah, enjoy!

Time to go through the Arvenuous mist

After our mishap with the Killing in the name of remix in our former post and on Too Many Sebastians' recommendation, I decided to post on Arveene and Misk. Arveene and Misk are an Irish dj duo consisting of Arveene and Misk aka Phil Byrne. Arveene has been around for 10 years djing clubs in Ireland and Misk used to be a part of breakbeat duo Splitloop. I first took note of Arveene and Misk when they earned themselves a place on Mr. Oizo's Pourriture Ep, something I very deeply respect.

According to their Myspace this is what Misk looks like:
And this is what Arveene looks like:

This isn't bumping electro, it's more really cool, calm, and collected stuff, that is well produced. All their tracks really do range quite a bit though. It has the sounds of electro, with some electro house breaks, but is definitely more ravey. I see why Oizo used them, very choppy and multilayered in many ways. I feel like a lot of these songs get a lot better after you reach the halfway point. The thing I've really noticed is that there are period of chaotic craziness in the songs, but they really are only a short part of the song.

Business Acumen (Arveene and Misk Remix) by In Flagranti, might be my favorite song of theirs.

Battle Scars Gallactica by Arveene and Misk Really like this song, definitely shows their more ravey side.

Fashion Feelings (Arveene and Misk Remix) by DK7 Cool song, certain parts of it really get me.

Be With You (Arveene and Misk Remix) by Directors Starts off real cool, and ends all chaotic, great.

Mad At You (Arveene and Misk Remix) by The Glass There are parts of this song, which could be lines by themselves, but also serve as really cool breaks. A short period of chaos, surrounded by calm, but still real chill.

Shadow Run (Arveene and Misk remix) by Huskey Rescue Fantastic Song, the main line could be turned into such a good rave line.

Funnily enough the Oizo's are my least favorite.

Erreur Jean (Arveene and Misk Remix) by Mr. Oizo It's pretty good, basically an edit, but I would play the orignial without a doubt. At least they didn't ruin the song, but it's basically the same.

Gay Dentist (Arveene and Misk's Stright Gyno Edit) by Mr. Oizo Just not that impressive. Definitely my least favorite of everything. I mean at least they don't butcher the song, but at the same time there is no point playing this instead of the oringial. I understand that its an edit but the fact remains that much of what they do I could probably do live while djing: rearranging the song, adding echo, looping certain parts. I don't understand the use of this edit...

Hells Bells by Arveene and Misk, This song definitely feels like the raviest of the bunch, really like it, especially the breakdown. Might have overtaken the Business Acumen as my favorite.

Go to our mishap, linked above, for their great remix of Killing in the name of.

The Amazing Disappearing Act

Our dear friend and contributor, Jumpman, has gone missing.  He's not returning any of my texts/calls/facebooks/pigeons, and I'm at quite a loss for how to go about contacting him.  I might blast the album Mustache (Half A Scissor) by Mr. Oizo off of my balcony in an attempt to lure him similar to when he showed up at my school without any batteries in his cell phone.  It's also very possible that he's opened up his own barber shop in Cuba where he designs customizable facial hair to order.  Or, maybe Bowser's finally gotten the poor sucker.  Well, if you're out there, dear Jumpman, give your droogies a ring and let us know that you still kickin' it with your maskie on.  Try to meet us as Union Station, otherwise we'll be waiting at Coney.  Until then, here's a hit with you in mind.
