A few Things I never Knew But Should Have

Major Lazer is a fictional cartoon character: a jamaican commando who lost his arm in the secret zombie war of 1984. He fights monsters, parties hard, and has a rocket-powered hoverboard.

According to Wikipedia, Avicii, Afrojack, and Bart B More all gained notoriety through Laidback Luke's online forum... I should be on forums more I guess. Also supposedly, Avicii was taken under Laidback Luke's wing in order to achieve what he has today. Nice.

Louder Than Words - Afrojack and David Guetta, This is the text I got from M: "Get Louder Than Words by Afro and Guetta its seriously the best". To which I asked him to post it, he said eventually. I'm stealing the thunder.

Bangduck (Original Mix) by Afrojack, I can't remember if this came out a while ago or not. In either  case I don't think we've posted it yet. Gotta Love it.

The Deadmau5 videos just show how much he's just such a nerd. A huge nerd, but seems nice. Gotta love his shit, even though some of our friends consider themselves his number 1 haters.

Expect Deadmau5 sample pack to be up here in the next few days.

Booka Shade Review

So I saw Booka Shade live at the Music Box in Hollywood last Thursday.  Review time.

-M

The opener was supposed to be Joaquin Bamaca.  However, after looking this dude up, he clearly wasn't the guy that we saw on stage.  Whoever we DID see, was quite possibly the worst DJ I've ever seen.  Not that he fucked up or anything, just the most boring, repetitive songs, terrible transitions, just really awful and boring.

Then Booka Shade came on.  They were pretty awesome.  The above video is them playing Charlotte on thursday.  They played all original songs, so if you're not familiar it's a sort of Progressive Techno / Tech House.  In other words, pretty, minimal, robotic music.  Some songs were definitely better than others, and the crowd would respond accordingly.  That said, I'd definitely recommend seeing them play a festival rather than a club.  Their sound is much better suited for a massive stage than a club.

How about some remixes?

Kingdom (Booka Shade Remix) - Dave Gahan
Sick track.  Techno.

The Expert (Booka Shade Remix) - Yello
More awesome Techno.

O Superman (ft. Laurie Anderson) (Felix Da Housecat Remix) - M.A.N.D.Y. & Booka Shade (Golden Banana)
Really like this one.  I remember hearing Destructo drop this at a HARD 13.

Tim Green

Tim Green is the man.  I'd been seeing his name around, but never really gave him the time he deserves.  I'm glad I finally did.  This dude makes some of the best rave music out there.  The big standout is his percussion.  He also just constructs these awesome grooves.  He makes both House and Techno, but none of it is Progressive in any ways, if anything he leans towards Tech, but some of his House tracks are just undeniably plain House.  Another thing about his tracks is that you can tell that they're meant to be felt just as much as they're meant to be heard, making them perfect for raves.

-M

Kitch In (Original Mix) - Tim Green
Awesome awesome awesome, probably his most famous track.

Raw Dog (Tim Green. Tg Remix) - Lee Burridge & Steve Porter  (Golden Banana)
Techno fans rejoice, this will be your favorite.

Lone Time (Original Mix) - Tim Green
Super percussive house

Bubble Gutz (Original Mix) - Apster
Another fantastic Dutch track.  Look's like Apster is on Afrojack's label, Wall Recordings.

Thekla Riddim - MJ Cole (Crazy Banana)
This track is crazy.  So dancey, so amazing.  I can't even really explain it, absolutely worth a listen.

Drop That (Original Mix) - Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike & Albin Myers
Going for a Dutch sound with this one with a Prog build.

Rocketship (Starkillers Dub) - Shiny Toy Guns
Ravey sound exploited.

Also a big shout out to Wesleyan's own Alphda Delta Phi.  I love you, and I want to play at The Grotto again.

Gotta love dem Bitches.  But since you're reading this here EDM blog, chances are you're more likely to have beaten Zelda more times than you've gotten your D wet.  Have no fear.  You know what Bitches love?  Techno.  So hear are some tracks on the Techier side, just blast these in your room with some mood lighting and you'll have the panties of your biddie(s) of choice in no time.

-M

Oldskool Thizzime

Treating you today with a batch of Oldskool UK Garage tracks, for those of you that don't know, UK Garage is a genre which developed in the mid-nineties in england, inspired by RnB, Chicago House, and Acid, Garage producers began making a unique sort of house, with a DnB like west indies sound palate at hand, that english love for breaks and wobbles, with a dark techy trance-like vibe, that would be subtle at first but the fast distinctive 2-step shuffle and sweeping wobbling basses began to come to the forefront,
As it moved further away from house, and emphasized garage's unique characteristics it would eventually evolve and divide into its subgenres of Grime, Dubstep, and Bassline, starting in the early the '00s.
As the '10s begin we have seen these forms going back to their roots, embracing the RnB/House vibe, but nonetheless are now informed by the innovative sounds of Dubstep and the like. Some Dubstep producers started trying their hand at a tribal sort of house in the late aughties using a distinctive afro/latin beat, inspiring a massive wave of producers to try their hand at this exciting new mutation of Garage, Funky. The sound is constantly evolving, and producers are constantly motivated to enter new sonic territory, as such we can see a few more subgenres on the horizon, think the J.Orbison/Joker/Guido progressive sound or Zomby&Ikonikas dark 8-bit vibes, oi, idk interesting stuff ahead under the Silly, Funky, & Soulful umbrella of Garage.
Anyways here's a taste of where it all started, beats from the '95-'02 era, thought i'd give you a history since ill be passing a few of these out over time, feel*

Wolfgang Returns

It's kind of a blog rule that when a new Wolfgang Gartner track emerges, it must be posted immediately, for obvious reasons.

Imma Be (Wolfgang Gartner Remix) - Black Eyed Peas

Danger EP

Yes yes, I know this Danger EP came out a while back, but you know, after listening to 4h30 for the first time after a long spree of only house, I came to find that I just needed to find this EP. And I'm glad I did. These songs just have so many layers and just change so much in such interesting ways. Also gotta love that video gamey feel to them. I admit though, I'm not a huge fan of the remixes on the EP. Oh well you can't win it all. Too bad though because there could be some really amazing remixes. But it's good to see this man keepin it real and great.

-J

4h30 by Danger, the most well known song on the EP and definitely my favorite. Just has some really catchy lines.

3h11 by Danger, trippiest?

3h16 by Danger, the most dangerous.

09/17/2007 - EP Zip

All the songs individually including the remixes.

Danger Myspace

EDIT: I accidentally put 09/14 as the album in itunes and zip title, I don't feel like reupping everything, it's as simple as selecting them all in itunes and changing the album from a 4 to a 7. Sorry about that.

Joy Orbison's '09 releases

Joy Orbison has been turning the Garage world on its head as he seamlessly unites its many facets, we seem to be entering a new era, with a new wave of artists helping to create an artfully progressive mutation of Dubstep. It came to my attention, that his must have track Hpyh Mngo had not been posted here, so i'm going to now, along with the rest of his released original work that i haven't already posted. Big Up to Joy!

Finally, Dimlite

Swiss psychedelic beatmaker/vocoder crooner, Dimlite, has been waiting to find a label for a couple years now to release what has now become the EP known as Prismic Tops, which came out this last week. It is like the rest of his work, a masterpeice of production, on par with the likes of Daedelus or Flying Lotus, who dropped his song 'sun sized twinkles' to mesmerizing effect in his BBC essential mix, anyways, been waiting for this ever since i heard it, now im giving it to you, this seminal EP of the psychedelic scene, enjoy!

Pregame!

I like to party.  I like to dance.  And I love to get down to some good tunes.  There is no better way to do all this, however, than with the bros.  I mean, look at these guys.  Each one brings something to the group, as they make especially clear in this picture.  The one on the left brings the humor, then the next one's reppin' (lamest bro, but someone's gotta be it, right?), 3rd bro brings the party, last dude is the rock, like the guy who's super chill but could totally kick your ass at any minute and can drink your ass under the table so hard you'll be fisting a toilet with your face while he's layin down game on your girl.  So here are some great Progressive jams that are guaranteed to get your bros going.  That 30 rack of Keystone Ice won't shotgun itself.

-M

Some Chords (Original Mix) - Deadmau5
Massive tune.  Also, this is Electro House and the only one in this post, but this needed to be posted.

Sometimes (Daddy's Groove Rework)  - Dim Chris feat. Amanda Wilson (Golden Banana)
I seriously think that these guys should be ruling the Progressive scene.  They have a somewhat Swedish sort of sound, but it's just more innovative.

Hoover (Adam K Remix) - EDX
This shit hits so hard, it's like playing slap shots.

Salvation (Jerome Isma-Ae & Daniel Portman Remix) - Chris Reece
Great rave tune, super pretty and hits incredibly hard as well.  While the chord changes might be a bit too familiar, it works.

Fantasy (EDX Remix) - Nadia Ali
Wow.  J is gonna be ALL up in this one.  He sent me a cute bromantic text last night.

Fantasy (Starkillers Remix) - Nadia Ali
Not as good as the above mix, but still quite good.  Is this Progressive House, or is it Trance?

Nyce (Original Mix) - Moguai
Some great shit coming from Mau5trap.

Nothing Is Wrong (Original Mix) - Adam K & Soha
And why not end it with a classic winning combo.  They really do make the best chords.

_________________________________

Also, have you guys SEEN the lineup for EDC this year?  It's just way too good.  Great place to roll deep with your bros and do some serious fist pumping.

And We Don't Stop

Looks like the leaked albums are just gonna keep coming and coming.  Currently listening, love what I hear so far.  If I had to say my favorite part so far, it's the abundance of awesome percussion.

LP4 - Ratatat

Also, Leland, if you're reading this, could you care to explain what THIS is?

Face Melters

Some tracks guaranteed to literally liquefy your face when blasted on appropriate speakers.

-M

Blast Off - Bassnectar & Jantsen (Golden Banana)
3:12 is by far one of the best drops I've ever heard.  This tune is absolutely massive, it's gargantuan, it's ridiculous.  And it's Dubstep if you haven't figured that out yet.

Clockwork (Valerna Remix) - Juelz Santana
Really loving the stuff coming from Valerna.  One of the groups that gives me faith in the future of Electro.

Toxic is Dead (Owl Vision Remix) - The Toxic Avenger
Same statement above applies to Owl Vision.

Teflon (Datsik & Excision Remix) - Kelly Dean & Steady ft. Kemst
Good Dubstep track to get your crowd pumped.

Face Melters Zipped

Also, please vote for our good buddy Procrastination, he just submitted his remix for the Yeasyaer competition:

Kalle (Arno Cost and Norman Doray Remix)  by Zoo Brazil (Golden Banana), I don't think this is a new track by any means but we've never posted it before and I've really come to like it. Prog goodness

Now & Forever (Norman Doray Crazzo Remix) by Henrik B, Another Norman Doray good one. I really like the vocals in this.

I'll Be There by Afrojack and Gregor Salto, It's got some Pon De Floor (directly) its got some Now you see it (directly), its Afrojack doing what he does best, Dutchy Dutch.
